Re-boring Motorcycle Cylinders
Motorcycle cylinders are re-bored using our BERCO AC650M machine. The operations involved are exactly the same as for machining car type cylinder blocks. Only the way in which the jobs are mounted on the machine varies.
Cylinder barrels requiring a re-bore to accept oversize pistons are mounted utilising any one of our many dedicated machining fixtures. Once mounted the barrel or holding fixture is clamped down and the bore to be machined is centralised using the dial indicator gauge built into the machine. The cutting head is set to the required size before each bore is machined in turn. After machining each cylinder is checked for size with a cylinder bore gauge. During the boring operation a small amount of material is deliberately left in the bore to allow enough for removal during the final honing process.

Finishing to Specific Clearances
Where required, each piston can be individually matched to a specific cylinder bore allowing more consistent running clearances to be maintained. This has benefits for both power and performance requirements and also reduced oil consumption and emissions.
- Each piston is measured and the appropriate clearance added to determine the final bore diameter
- GS750, GS550 Suzuki, 4 Cyl. Re-boring using single parallel arrangement
- During boring, and honing pistons are selected to achieve the correct running clearance
- After final honing, each piston is marked to match the appropriate bore
