Balanced parts installed

I want to say a big thank you to Andy & his team for balancing my Formula Vee engine parts.

I dropped the parts off in Slough and was surprised about Andy’s knowledge regarding high performance aircooled engines. He is one of those people who gives the time for the customer to explain their needs.

He quoted me 2 weeks to get the job done but received the phone call after 1 week to my surprise. Usually when you drop off something to get work done you have to chase people.

The work was reasonably priced and good value for money compared to what some other companies were charging. HT Howard are my preferred shop for engine machining work!

Classic Mini Engine Machining

“When rebuilding the engine on my Classic Mini I discovered that the inside of the cylinder was badly scored as a result of a gudgeon pin coming loose at some point in the engine’s life. Knowing that the cylinder needed re-boring, I contacted HT Howard via their enquiry form on their website and received a swift and detailed response to my enquiry. Andy was very knowledgeable about the problem which gave me the confidence that he was able to carry out the work. He discussed the range of options available, which helped me decide on the best course of action. The following work was carried out: cylinder block was bored (+0.040″), rods balanced, new pistons ordered, pistons fitted to con-rods, piston rings installed and all parts cleaned ready to be refitted. When it came to the bill, all work carried out was clearly itemised so I could see what I was paying for and paying by bank transfer was very convenient.

Throughout the repair, Andy kept me updated on the phone and was prompt with answering my emails. HT Howard was also very strict with following Covid safe procedures that needed to be followed at the time (Jan 2021) which further demonstrated their professionalism.

HT Howard is highly recommended to anyone who is in need of a knowledgeable and professional engineer to work on their beloved engine.”

Hi Andy,

I wanted to thank Mark and yourself for the great job that you did on my cylinder head, the bike is now running and it sounds spot on. I have included a recommendation below.

“I spoke to Andy on the telephone after my 1968 Triumph Bonneville T120R suffered a stuck valve and a push rod failure. Andy informed me that he had worked on several T120R cylinder heads replacing both the valve guides and valve seats, this gave me the confidence to entrust H.T Howard with carrying out the necessary work on my cylinder head and I wasn’t disappointed.

After an initial appraisal of the cylinder head Andy called me to discuss the work that was required and a breakdown of prices. He was especially knowledgeable about my cylinder head and outlined the benefits of the valve guide liners and valve seat inserts that H. T. Howard supply and the precision machines that are used to give the exact tolerances required.

Mark carried out the required work on my cylinder head and his years of experience could be seen in the finished job, it was of the highest quality. When I had any questions both Andy and Mark were more than happy to take the time to discuss my questions.

In the end, my job was done on time and within our agreed budget. Knowledge, honesty and workmanship perfectly describes H. T. Howard & Co and I would have no hesitation in recommending them.

Having Andy and Mark at H T Howard to sort out over half a century of wear and tear, abuse and misuse to the engine of my 1959 Triumph Tiger 100 during its comprehensive rebuild has been invaluable.

They have great experience in dealing with all aspects of engine overhaul and refurbishment and the engineering capability and enthusiasm to carry it out.

This particular project required everything from fitting new cylinder liners, boring, honing, ring gapping, crank grinding, re-bushing and honing cam bushes in crankcase, re-facing surfaces to three crankcase areas , re-facing cylinder top and bottom, plus valve seats, valves, etc, etc. All carried out the highest standards, and within a reasonable time and at highly competitive prices.

Having had the benefit of their excellent work on a previous project a 1933 MG J2 and then the 1959 Triumph Tiger 100 I can highly recommend them to any one requiring good engineering services for any type or age of vehicle from vintage through to modern.

Andy at H T Howard proved to be an excellent choice for the refurbishment of my Triumph Bonneville T120 1961 cylinder head.  From the first phone call they understood my needs and requirements which gave me the confidence to send it to them from my base in Portugal.  They were helpful, knowledgeable, kept me informed by email and provided a service which was beyond my expectations and within budget. What a difference from its original state, you can’t choose a better company.

1937 Harley Flathead restoration completed. This is a side valve engine and HT Howard fitted new valve seat, valve guides, ground in new valves and skimmed the cylinder top surface. Before the work began I was given a detailed quote stating exactly what work would be done. All work was carried out to a very high standard with great customer service. I would highly recommend HT Howard and would certainly use them again.

“As the owner of a well-loved 1965 Sunbeam Alpine I contacted Andy and his team at H T Howard following the necessity for a cylinder head rebuild following a blown head gasket. Straight away I was confronted with not only extremely knowledgeable staff but also a group of guys who put old school customer service at the forefront of everything they do. Not shy in giving sound advice at every step of the process and keeping me regularly updated along the way.  I can only say that their outstanding professionalism shone through and leaves me with no doubt that they are the only option for all your engine rebuild and repair requirements. Thank you so much for all your help and support from one very happy Sunbeam Alpine owner”

This Kawasaki Z1A was bought having been left unused for many years. HT Howard were chosen for the engine works which involved a re-bore to first over size along with new valves and guides.
A subsequent problem required the removal and refitting of the cylinder liners.
Andy’s expertise, particularly with motorcycle work, resulted in first class results and the motorcycle is now complete and running superbly.

I always trust my engineering work to Andy and his team .You know that you are in safe hands and that the job will be done well and on time by professionals.
HT Howard can also be trusted to source the best quality component’s and deal with engine balancing with the end result being a smoother unit than the factory could produce.
From my Cosworth YB through the last twenty years to my A Series, HT Howard have always produced the same high standard.

A standard Midget is 65 BHP and following the engine work by H T Howard mine attained 72.5 BHP which the tuner was very impressed by!

The GWR Preservation Group Limited (GWRPG) heritage stock a Generator Van originally built in 1959 for use as a fish van.  This was converted in the mid 1960’s into a generator van for the Willesden MD Electrification Train. During 1988 it was purchased by the GWRPG to assist in supplying power for our site.

After over 50 years of use it was in need of some overdue maintenance and the engine, a Perkins P3 144 was stripped down to find out what it required. Unfortunately many parts were badly worn and it needed a complete overhaul.

We contacted a number of engine remanufacturers in and around London and spoke at length to H.T. Howard, based in Slough who were enthusiastic about the project and keen to help. They took the project on with much interest and have completely re-engineered various parts to a true professional standard and in a timely manner.

We thank them for providing a highly professional service, keeping in contact when other circumstances arose during the overhaul.

The GWR Preservation Group would recommend them to any future customer.

Since 1978 Andy and his father in the past have provided a rapid, accurate and professional service to me at reasonable cost. During my restoration of more vintage motorcycles than I care to remember their re-bores and technical advice have been totally reliable. In recent years they have done regular re-bores for my pre war Triumphs and Sunbeams.

My 1964 Rover 2000, P6 had always used a bit of oil and on occasions smoked when hot.

I removed the head and discovered that in addition to the valve guide seals it required the further services of a machine shop.
I selected H.T. Howards of Slough where Andy examined the head and valve guides, identifying the worn parts and explained what he could do and the stages involved.
I was very impressed in my dealings with Andy, he was very approachable, always called back promptly with prices and progress, took time to explain the options and what was involved. The price quoted for the various options did not change, and there were no ‘last minute hidden surprises’. I would happily use H.T. Howards again if the situation arose, and I would also have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone who needed the services of a first class machine shop.

The engine is now back together running smoothly.
I discovered later that a neighbour of mine who specializes in Jaguars also uses them for his work.

A friend of mine recommended H T Howard after I had had substandard  work done on two engines by another engineering company. Since then I have used H T Howard for various jobs on the engines of the following cars and motorcycles owned by either me or my wife – MK 11 Zodiac Farnham Estate, 1958 Triumph Speed Twin, 1961 Triumph T110, Royal Enfield Continental GT and 1954 Cadillac Coupe DeVille. Most of these jobs were not straightforward, but Andy [and his dad!] and Mark dealt with them in a professional and methodical manner and at a good price. I now have reliable engines in all the above vehicles thanks to H T Howard.

H.T. Howard have skillfully and carefully repaired many rare and challengingly intricate cylinder heads for classic Italian motorcycles for many years now. Their work is always to a very high standard, and to accurate timescales and we have always found Andy and his colleagues professional and pleasant to work with.

They are a safe pair of hands, rarely found in automotive specialist engineering shops now.

I first became aware of HT Howard on the recommendation of Bill Lacey, of Brooklands Norton fame. Many years later that recommendation stands even better. Andy has worked on both my AC 16/70 Greyhound and Riley Kestrel over the past few years. I find the helpful approach, careful perusal, useful comments and application of skills means that you can assemble your engine with absolute confidence. Prices are fair which means that it is money well spent.

I had a classic Rover V8 engine from my MGB that had been rebuilt in the recent past but that needed some further repair. After stripping the engine, I took the components to H T Howard to seek their advice on the work required. I was impressed with the knowledge and interest shown in this ‘older’ engine, and received a comprehensive assessment of the condition of each component.

After agreeing the engineering work required which included a cylinder re-bore, new pistons and a block pressure test, it was completed to a very high standard and at a very competitive price. I was rebuilding the engine myself and Andy was happy to provide helpful advice and ‘tips of the trade’.

Their approach was thorough and professional at all times and I would recommend them for any engineering work required on both new and classic engines

I have used HT Howard for over 28 years and have always found them to be professional, knowledgeable and very helpful. I run a busy garage business, Boxer Motor Company Ltd in Maidenhead, and over the years I have had many jobs carried out by Andy and his team from cylinder head skim, cylinder head rebuild, short engine rebuild or supply of used engine parts or reconditioned engines. They always given the cost of the job prior to commencing work and offer a prompt service. They are well located in Slough and I would have no hesitation in recommending their services to both business and private customers alike.

I would like to thank Andy and Mark for their expertise in re-machining my MK1 VW Golf engine block and cylinder head.

After previously buying an exchange engine from a Essex based vw ‘specialist’ and being let down by a poor quality engine with smoke pouring out of it in the first 3000 miles, I was recommended to H T Howard by a local mechanic.

I was impressed by the quality of service and knowledge offered to me from Andy, and the effort that is made to find out which components will work best with what. Andy never failed to call back with information.

I am currently running in my MK1 Golf and it is purring nicely. It’s so nice to start her up without plumes of smoke coming out! I would recommend HT Howard and will be using them again for my next project.

Thank you again.
